KATU Thomas R. Dargan Scholarship is open to minority college students in the states of Oregon and Washington. Minority students can include Asian; Black/African American; Hispanic or Latino; American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.
Applicants must be at least college sophomores attending an accredited four-year college or university or an accredited community college (where credits can transfer to a four-year college) in Oregon or Washington. This scholarship is for students studying in the fields of broadcast, communications, or multi-media.
Candidates must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Scholarship money can be used for room, board, tuition, and books. To apply, students must complete an essay that describes their personal and professional goals and what they would like to accomplish as a minority in the field of broadcasting. In addition to an application and essay, an official transcript and three letters of recommendation are required. Scholarship winners are also eligible for a paid internship at Fisher Broadcasting/KATU.
The scholarship is named in honor of Thomas R. Dargan, who had a 38-year distinguished career as a broadcaster and was Executive Vice President at Fisher Broadcasting KATU in Portland, Oregon.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in APRIL of each year, and the award amount is usually $6,000.
