Carole Simpson Scholarship was established to help minority students overcome obstacles in their career path in electronic journalism. The scholarship is open to college students who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors and are pursuing careers in radio, television, or digital journalism.
Applicants must be full-time students enrolled in an accredited college or university and be in good standing at their institution. Their application must include a cover letter that describes their current and past journalism experience, why they chose a career in journalism, and how they intend to use their scholarship funds.
In addition, applicants must include URL links to 3-5 work samples, which must include broadcast (television/radio) or online news pieces. Work samples should be uploaded to a host site like YouTube, Vimeo, SoundCloud, or other similar host sites.
The scholarship is one of many offered through the Radio Television Digital News Foundation, the non-profit, educational branch of the Radio Television Digital News Association which was founded in 1946 for the purpose of supporting professionals in the news industry.
Carole Simpson is a former RTDNF trustee who has led the way for minorities and women in broadcasting. Simpson was the first woman broadcast news in Chicago, the first African American woman to anchor a network TV evening newscast, and the first minority woman to solo moderate a presidential debate.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in JANUARY of each year, and the award amount is usually $2,000.
